If you have made it to this site you are searching for answers. You are scared because your beloved pet has been diagnosed with a frightening degenerative liver condition that can greatly affect their quality of life and shorten their lifespan. It can also involve very expensive, traumatic and dangerous treatment options such as invasive tests, procedures and surgery.
Your dog may just have poor liver health indicated by elevated liver enzymes and/or other symptoms. Whatever the case, your dog's liver health is poor and that is why you are here.
Your vet may not be offering you much hope at this point. Here is the standard vet view: "Over half of the dogs that have shunts will have progression of their clinical signs and will die or be euthanized in a year unless they have surgery." Wow! I'm glad this has not been the experience of the dogs I work with!
"Let me start by saying that if you have found this website, you are in the right place. With Rick's help we have witnessed our very sick, sweet Sissy girl return to the happy, healthy doggie she once was. Words can't express how thankful we are to have her back." Full Testimonial Click here

I feel that you have been directed to this site for a reason. This website will finally give you hope and the most logical answers and explanations why your dog is suffering from:
Liver Shunt (aka portosystemic shunt or intrahepatic shunt) or
Hepatic Microvascular Dysplasia (HMVD or just MVD) or
any type of Liver Disease or
Poor Liver Health - Elevated Liver Enzymes
Seizures
Bladder Stones
Cushing's Disease
Hypoglycemia
Protein Losing Enteropathy
I offer food based solutions that may rid your dog of these problems FOREVER. You may find this hard to believe based on what you have been through or have been told, but it is absolutely true based on my experience with thousands of dogs. You may be amazed and bewildered why no one has shared this information with you thus far or ever before.
With so much information available on the internet, it is impossible to know what is true and what isn’t, and what really works. My nutritional approach gets results and it has given hope, peace of mind, and joy to thousands of people that didn’t know which way to turn. Please let me help your dog as well.
I expect you to be skeptical. That is normal and is actually a good thing. There will be things I am going to tell you that are completely opposite of what your Vet will tell you. Take a look at my page that addresses this specifically. It can get VERY confusing. All I ask is that you keep an open mind and see if my approach makes sense to you. Your dog's life may depend on it.

"I’d been told that if we didn’t have surgery for her liver shunt, Princess Jewels would die in 2 years. It’ll be 4 years and counting this November on your approach and she is doing great! Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Just know that everything that you read on this site is absolutely true and backed up by natural health principles that have been around for centuries.
These principles of "natural healing" have been written and talked about by certain Doctors, Veterinarians and other health professionals for hundreds of years. You can go to any Library in the world and find many books on the subject. But these views are not "mainstream" and use food and not drugs, so your vet was not taught these principles in Vet School.
Your Vet was trained in the use of prescription drugs and surgery. But when you are dealing with a problem with the liver that is most likely a nutritional problem, this approach may not be helpful. Drugs and surgery are not effective long term for conditions caused by nutritional deficiencies or toxic exposure.
Know this - a liver shunt, MVD or poor liver health is NOT a genetic condition. Your vet may still believe it is, and tell you that your dog's liver problems are genetic. It is not so, based on multiple studies and my experience with thousands of dogs. Your dog's genetics have little or nothing to do with what is going on right now. What your dog has is very likely a nutritional problem.

"BB is a COMPLETELY different dog after just one week of following your advice to the letter. Her breathing is no longer labored. She is running around like a crazy puppy (which I haven't seen in over 2 months). Her belly (or liver) bloating is down tremendously. I can see her waist again. She has had almost zero confusion (which was happening many many times a day)."
"I will keep following this program! I can't express enough how happy I am with BB's change. I cry tears of joy often watching her run around!!"

I can practically recite your story before you tell it to me: It may start one of several ways:
"During a routine blood test my dog/puppy was found to have Elevated Liver Enzymes." or "My dog has been vomiting and is not interested in eating." Read about Elevated Liver Enzymes Click here
"My dog is staggering around like they are drunk, pacing around aimlessly, head rubbing, staring off into space, wanting to get into small tight places, experiencing temporary blindness or very lethargic. My vet thought it might be early dementia at first." This may be Hepatic Encephalopathy - read more about it Click here
Watch a short video clip of a dog with Hepatic Encephalopathy symptoms Click here
"My dog is having seizures that scare me to death - why is this happening? My vet just gives us heavy drugs for this". Read about Seizures Click here
"My dog has bouts of tremors and shaking" Read about Hypoglycemia Click here
"My dog has one Urinary Tract Infection after another" Read about UTI's Click here
"My dog has struvite crystals/bladder stones that never go away" Read about Bladder Stones Click here
It all usually leads to this - "We were then advised to do a Bile Acid Test to test the liver's function and confirm a possible liver shunt. Read about the Bile Acid Test Click here
This test may show elevated Bile Acid levels. The Vet said that numbers under 100 indicate Microvascular Dysplasia (MVD) and numbers over 100 indicate a liver shunt.
Now they want to do an Ultrasound and/or Scintigraphy/Laproscopy etc. to see what kind of shunt it is (inside the liver or outside the liver) and how many shunts there are. They even mentioned doing a Liver Biopsy and taking a chunk of tissue from the liver.
"They say that my dog won't live very long without expensive & traumatic surgery. I'm scared because I don't have the money for this and/or my dog/puppy may die on the operating table due to the anesthesia. There seem to be no guarantees that the surgery will be successful or even help."
"Already I am running up a huge Vet bill from all these tests and procedures, the prescription low protein food that my dog has to eat (but doesn't like), the antibiotics, stool softener, liver drugs, digestive drugs, anti seizure drugs, etc ....... that my dog has to eat or take for the rest of their lives?!"
"My Vet has even mentioned putting my dog/puppy down because there is nothing more they can do."
"I just want my beloved dog/puppy to be well. Can anybody help me?"
Thankfully, there is hope and you will find solutions on this website.

Liver Shunts and Hepatic MVD are Epidemic Among Our Dogs Today

iStock by Getty Images
Thousands of dollars are spent during crisis intervention, on medications, prescription diets and surgery, yet the problem never seems to be quite under control. Dogs who try to "medically manage" the condition or even have surgery to correct the shunt, go into a holding pattern at best and have a few years without symptoms until further degenerative symptoms appear. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's) and/or Bladder stones are a continuing problem. Liver Enzymes continue to be elevated. Bile Acids are still out of balance. Some symptoms may have gone away but healing does NOT seem to be happening. Does this sound familiar? I see this in case after case.
Is this really the path that you want to go down or stay on with your dog?
Traditional Veterinary awareness is mostly focused on symptom treatment, and thus the underlying causes of liver shunts and poor liver health are not truly being considered. Of course, nutrition is rarely discussed in the veterinary office, except to recommend prescription formulas promoted by the dog food companies. "Is this really the best food for my dog?!" you say. "Is this food just taking away his/her symptoms or is it a food that they can thrive on?" Your Vet doesn't really know.
In the 20+ years that we have been researching natural alternative remedies for animals, we have found that most cases involving chronic liver problems, stem from biological (genetics, assimilation, viral/bacterial), and environmental (diets, pesticides, toxins, vaccinations, pollution) causes. Regardless of the trigger, the end result is always the same - an overburdened liver, poor liver health and the possible growth of a liver shunt or multiple liver shunts.
The liver shunt is seen by standard Vets to be the CAUSE of symptoms and the poor liver health. Question - What if a liver shunt is NOT the cause of poor liver health, but merely a more serious symptom of the poor liver health? Then all the treatment focused on the liver shunt would merely be treating the SYMPTOM of disease, not the actual cause of the disease itself.
Maybe this is why traditional treatment is so ineffective when it comes to treating liver shunt in dogs. Because the treatment never gets to the root cause of the problem. Maybe this is why your Vet may have few answers to ridding your dog of this condition. Maybe this is also why a liver shunt diagnosis to your Vet is often a death sentence.

"3 months later Marley is soooo much better. I just wanted to say thank you very much for the guidance to help me to see and open my eyes to another form of healing through nutrition. Marley has been seizure free since the last time we spoke back in January (for three months now). He has shown more energy and life as well. I'm slowly weaning him off the anti seizure medication day by day. I'm so fortunate to have came across your assistance to bring Marley back to life instead of what the Dr's placed in my face as no hope and a recommendation to end his life ... Or telling me that your approach I was trying may not be the best for Marley. Boy, were they ever wrong! I cannot thank you enough!!!!" Read full testimonial Click here

Traditional treatment usually involves a low animal protein prescription diet and drugs. Unfortunately it is my conclusion that this actually helps to perpetuate the problem. I do not believe that animal protein alone is the culprit, although it is a contributing factor. Instead I believe that your dog’s digestive tract, liver and kidneys are overburdened due to poor nutrition and toxic overload. I will expand on this subject on the website page for causes of dog liver shunt, MVD and liver disease in dogs . Read about causes of liver shunt Click here
The extremely high success rate of my recommended diet and proper whole food supplementation in managing or totally eliminating symptoms (most often for a lifetime), has confirmed my beliefs. I have even seen liver shunts disappear once the liver is restored to health. Bottom line, this approach works and will work for your dog as well. I know this because I have experience with over 1500 cases with a success rate well over 90%.
Therefore, if you are contemplating further testing or expensive procedures, please know that NONE of the tests, special prescription diets, drugs, supplements, even surgery….etc., will likely lead to a permanent solution to your dog’s liver shunt, MVD and poor liver health. In fact they are just going to drain your bank account and you will spend thousands of dollars and your beloved pet will likely be NO closer to better health. In fact they will likely die if you wait too long.
"The veterinary university we went to wants to do surgery. Furthermore they want him for a study. To prepare for this they advised us to put him on a diet of prescription Royal Canin Hepatic dog food. This was the last straw as we found out that the surgery doctor wrote her PhD. about Liver Shunt sponsored partly by Royal Canin. The study that she wants to do on our dog is merely to confirm her findings, so that we see no sense. By the way, she wants to take a little bit of his liver for long term study."
What if there is a much different and completely natural way to eliminate your dog’s symptoms and get to the root cause of their problems, leading to a lifetime of health and the long life that they deserve?

"Desperately, I searched and searched the web. I found a lot of conflicting information. Instead, I needed facts, hope and the answer to Reilly’s problem. I then found Rick’s website. Were these testimonials for real? Free consultations? I suddenly felt hope. I called the toll free number and spoke with Rick. He was sincere, caring and willing to help. I was informed of the benefits of organic whole food nutrition and its healing ability. Rick had given me a life preserver, yet I was not ready to climb on board. After all, I knew more than the average person about organic nutrition. I could now take care of Reilly on my own. A little knowledge can be dangerous, as I would soon realize. I would advise you not to make the same mistake. Your pet’s life is at stake. I wasted six months before starting on this approach that saw amazing results in two weeks."

Who I Am

"Thank you, Rick. You’re the nicest person I ever dealt with online. I am so lucky to have found you!"

I am Rick Scheyer and I am the real person behind this website.
Some people call me the "Liver Whisperer".
My purpose is to help you eliminate your fear and anxiety regarding what is happening to your beloved pet and friend. I also want to end your dog's suffering and restore their health and lengthen their life, if at all possible. I believe that there is a very good chance this WILL happen if you are willing to receive my help. My hope is that you give me a chance to do what I am extremely good at.
There is so much on the internet that you cannot trust. I hope that you trust the information on this website because it is true based on my experience helping over 2,000 dogs. I'm not hiding behind some faceless business or logo. I am extremely proud of what I do and the results I have gotten. And I give a tremendous amount of information away for free. I am who you will talk to when you call or email.
First of all, I am NOT a Veterinarian and do not give Veterinary Medical Advice. I just get extremely good results.
The material on this site is provided for educational and informational purposes only and must not be taken as “medical advice”.
The information and directions in these writings, individually and collectively, are in no way to be considered as a substitute for consultations with a duly licensed Veterinarian regarding diagnosis and/or treatment of disease and are not intended to diagnose or treat your dog. Please consult with your Veterinarian for this advice.
I am a nutrition researcher and educator. Based on my research and experience, I believe that the best approach to animal and human health is to work with whole foods, not man-made processed food or synthetic supplements. Simply put, “The quality of an animal's health reflects in large measure the quality of the foods they eat and the water they drink, from which their bodies are made.”
My health philosophy is based on the fact that an animal's body is a marvelously designed living organism with the ability to grow, regulate, repair, and defend itself when given natural, high quality, full spectrum nutrients. The result of this philosophy is to depend on whole foods and whole food supplements from natural and organically grown foods to enhance the quality of an animal's body performances (physical, mental, and emotional).
I am also not a nutritionist by profession. I am a health researcher and educator based on all the research I've done to heal my own body and the pets I've worked with. I and my colleagues have worked with many individuals with health problems and their pets for the last 20+ years, and our recommendations to them are always based on the philosophy that "Food is the Best Medicine." Sometimes we need doctors and vets, but in chronic conditions such as poor liver health, many times only the body can heal itself and it can only do that through good nutrition, good food based supplements, good water, exercise, love, etc.

All of the information I've learned comes from medical doctors. All the information I hope to be passing on to you comes from books written by medical Doctors and Vets. Go to any library and you will likely find many books on the subject. These Doctors and Vets do not prescribe chemical drugs, but they rely on good nutrition.
These medical Doctors have proven through clinical research and studies that there is a direct relationship between what happens in the digestive tract and liver, which are the first two lines of defense in the body, and all degenerative diseases. If you go to one of these MDs or Vets, they will do tests and in all cases, they will tell you the same thing; take care of the digestive system and the liver and the chronic problem will go away. One of these medical doctors is Henry Bieler, M.D. who wrote about the gut and liver connection to all degenerative conditions back in 1950. What he says in this book also applies to pets’ degenerative conditions.
Now many of the current practicing MDs and Vets are proving the same theory: there is a gut and liver connection to all degenerative conditions. Their books are full of logical information and are very empowering to all of us because they've proven that we are our own best doctors if we just eat right and feed our pets right. But unfortunately, it is unlikely that your dog is currently being treated by this type of vet. They are small in number.

"After the changes I've seen in Mallory, I cannot imagine why anyone would ever feed their dog anything else but a real food diet. For the first time Mallory is excited about eating, jumping in the air while I am preparing her food because she cannot wait. The most amazing testament to Rick is that Mallory has been UTI free for nine months! Because of him, she is completely off all medication!! Her coat looks amazing and her energy level is off the charts."

The Natural Healing Path To Better Health

Out of all the confusing information available I have found the path to better health and I am happy to share this information with you. It is based on sound, proven principles that, for some reason, are still outside of the mainstream thinking of most Doctors and Vets. If you are ready to look into a new approach, I am here to support and help you.
A lot of people I work with are already using these principles to improve their own health, and realize "Why not use the same principles to help my dog?"
Other people start to see the tremendous results that their dog is getting and ask me "How can I get some of the same benefits for myself?!!"
I would love to teach and coach you in the process of how to heal your dog naturally, just as I have for thousands of other dog lovers. Click here to get a list of questions that will tell me more about your dog’s condition, his/her diet etc.
I do not charge for a Free consultation, (obviously - that is why it is free), so you have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Don't delay. Your dog doesn't have any time to lose. I even have a tab to the left that says it all - ACT NOW.

The longer you wait, the greater your dog's chance of a shortened life span and early death. It doesn't have to be this way. But it may be time for you to take some action before it is too late. Your dog's life is in your hands. Act now.

"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Rick for saving Bluebell's life. She now has a new baby sister, Willow and is full of life to play and go on her walks See video of Bluebell and Willow playing – this is adorable Click here. Best of all she is free from the seizures that scared us so much. Both sisters now benefit from Rick’s nutritional regimen and are healthy and enjoying life to the fullest. I cannot imagine what we would have done if we had not found your website and started on your path of healing."
