Dog Seizures
"I am the most skeptical person, especially about things off of the Internet. However, I am truly thankful I took the steps I did to try Rick's whole food approach. Our little 5 pound Maltese was finally diagnosed with a liver shunt. He had been having multiple seizures each week. He was very weak and sick. After the diagnosis, I began researching and came across the doglivershunt website. We are now 3 and a half months into the full approach. Our Wrigley has not had a single seizure since we started. He is back to being playful and a very healthy, happy puppy. Testimonials are truly important to me when trying something. All of the foods and supplements are all natural which is why it appealed to me. No drugs, like the vets were wanting us to do. We are extremely thankful and feel so blessed to have found this website! Thank you Rick!"

What is a Seizure?
Seizure, convulsion, fit, epilepsy. These terms all describe the same thing - What happens when a sudden and uncontrolled burst of neurological activity occurs in the brain. Sometimes the neurological disturbance remains localized to a small area, such as the face or one limb. Usually, however, the uncontrolled firing of neurons spreads from the brain throughout the body, causing generalized convulsions.
It is often hard for traditional MDs and vets to find the cause of seizures. Here's what Henry Beiler, M.D. who wrote the book "Food is your best medicine" said about seizures. This book was written regarding human health, but it applies to our canine friends as well.
My comments are in green or underlined in parenthesis:
"Food eaten today is about as far removed from the natural diet of man as man is from his however, still has approximately the same digestive apparatus and liver as his remote ancestors. If he lives on natural food, his liver remains efficient; if he fills his stomach with breads, hot dogs, chili, doughnuts washed down with coffee, his outraged liver cannot do its work. (For dogs it is all the chemicals they are being fed in commercial dry and wet foods, as well as medicines and synthetic supplements). Whether his liver breaks down early or late depends upon how good an organ it was at birth (nutrition supplied by the mother). But break down it will, and when it fails to filter and neutralize toxins from the blood, an extra line of defense must come into play. This defense is carried on by the endocrine glands, which try to direct these toxins into other eliminative organs. The principal endocrine glands called upon for this effort are the pituitary which lies at the base of the brain, the thyroid, situated in the neck, and the adrenals, which fit like a cap over each kidney.
Glands of internal secretion then are pressed into hyper-function, forced to manufacture more of their secretion. However, since the amount of gland's secretion is in exact ratio to the volume of blood entering it, the gland is enlarged by this extra blood supply, which often can have disastrous physical consequences.
The pituitary gland, for example, does not have much room in which to swell, encased as it is in a bony cup at the base of the skull and very little swelling can take place without creating a pressure on a gland within its box. This pressure can cause alarming symptoms. Four different diseased states, all arising from a toxemia of the blood, can result from the pituitary pressure: migraine headache, the common types of epilepsy, acromegaly and blindness.
There are many cases in my files of epilepsy cases in which the distressing symptoms have been arrested and the body restored to health. This was accomplished by taking the excessive dietary burden off the liver, (take the dog off commercial foods and put him/her on a real food diet with whole food supplements) which then was able to cleanse the blood stream and restore a balance between the pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands." (pp. 44-45)
My recommendation: your dog needs to be on a real food diet and whole food based supplements that will support the intestinal tract and liver so that the pituitary gland is not under stress. Seizures may then be eliminated once and for all.

Here are some comments from owners of dogs I have helped:
"I am happy to say, I still have no seizures to report after approx 2 months! I am so amazed. What a drastic change. I was within a few months of having to put her down because I couldn't control her seizures. I was just at my limits. I feel like you saved her life. She probably would not be here if it wasn't for you. Thank you for giving her a chance to live!"
"I wanted to take a moment and write you with an update on Princess. I swear I wish I could hug you both! I am so pleased with how she has changed, she is almost like a new animal! Almost to the 'T' as your email stated may occur, she had a series of seizures about a month into the new diet. My father was visiting during this time and I also implemented quite a few more varieties of veggies and fruits at once so perhaps one of those two may have also instigated the onset of the detox. She has several for about a three day span or so and no more since. We are going on about maybe seven or eight weeks now I think. I honestly never imagined this would work, I almost felt as if I was getting sucked into an infomercial gimmick or something. I just didn't think there was that much difference in what we ate that would cause this significant difference in her health. She sleeps with me now where she used to hide out in my closet all the time. She even stretches out and rolls on her back to have her belly rubbed! This seems like normal canine behavior but this was never typical behavior of this dog. You know, when she was taking her medication I thought that she was slightly suffering from some sort of mental retardation or something. It was like she couldn't really see me. I thought she may have had a hint of blindness from all the seizures. Now, she's so alert, she's such a joy."
"My beautiful dog, Rosie was having neurological episodes, some form of seizure consistently every 4-6 weeks for about 1 year. All of her blood work came back normal. Our next step was an MRI of her brain. We decided to try the diet regimen given by Rick/Cindy. We couldn't be happier with the results. Rosie has been seizure free for 21 wks/5 days. She's a different dog, she has energy and more spunk. Plus she LOVES to eat! Thank you Rick for helping Rosie to better health!"
"I found Rick's website while looking for a surgeon who could help us with our Shih tzu who had been diagnosed with a liver shunt. After calling and emailing him, Rick was so helpful and it made perfect since to try this diet before a risky surgery. From day one, our dog enjoys eating again, is no longer lethargic and has stopped throwing up bile and having head seizures. It is a remarkable transformation! I am elated with his progress. I no longer worry and I am so thankful for him!"
"Rick is one of the most amazing people in the world. He helps not only the animals, he also helps the families. His help is invaluable, professional and with care. I said it many times but I will say it hundred times more. I will be grateful for the rest of my life for your help."
"3 year old Morkie started having seizures about 6 months ago and was diagnosed with a liver shunt from my vet who recommended traditional methods to help his condition such as an ultrasound and eventually surgery. I found this wonderful website that outlined how to cure my dog's condition with organic foods and supplements. It has been almost 4 months and this is the best thing I could have done for my dog and to greatly improve the quality of his life."
"So far, this has been such an encouraging experience with Rick. He has a great bedside manner and do a wonderful job explaining EXACTLY what is going on with your pet. While my Vet filled me with fear, they filled me with hope. Perhaps you might be a bit skeptical-- that is understandable. For your dog's sake, take a leap of faith and give them a call or email."
"Bella's seizures are gone! I am happy to say, I still have no seizures to report after approx 2 months! I am so amazed. What a drastic change. I was within a few months of having to put her down because I couldn't control her seizures. I was just at my limits. I feel like you saved her life. She probably would not be here if it wasn't for you. Thank you for giving her a chance to live!!"
"We are very appreciative for the time & through guidance given by Rick. Our pom was having seizures and decided to give this alternative method to cure him a try. He is in his third week of transition to a healthy diet and lifestyle and we are so happy for his progress. Although it requires some dedication, it's worth it, as we are seeing improvements: only two seizures since he started and he is gaining some body weight after years of barely eating!"
"We feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off our shoulders since talking to Rick! We've only just begun the journey, but can already see improvements. Dexter's fur is shiny and soft and he has the old sparkle in his eyes that we've missed so much since his episodes began. We know we're on the right path and we know we're working with the right people, and we can't thank you enough! Stay tuned for further positive updates."
"I wanted this email to be a HUGE thank you! It has only been 3 1/2 months since Wrigley started the whole foods supplements and raw vegetables and little meat However, I truly believe you have helped save his life. He is in SO much better health already. He has not had one single seizure since we transitioned him. I only wish everyone knew about this plan for their pet. Thank you for all you do each day to help others!!!"
For the past year Hanna has been having seizures every 3 weeks. We are now going into the 5th Week with no seizure. She is so much happier and has a very waggy tail and a far better quality of life. Even the vet has noticed the difference in her and is quite amazed she hasn’t had a seizure yet. Thank you for all your help - it's marvelous.
"In March I contacted you regarding my Papillon, Abigail. I am happy to report she stopped having seizures after the first week of starting on your approach, and in general has made a complete recovery. All in all, she is doing great. I took her in to the vet about 48 hours after we changed her diet and even the vet was surprised and recommended that "if it works, keep with it". "
"Murphy hasn’t had a seizure for 2 weeks since starting on your suggestions. Before, they came in clusters with a few days in between the clusters. He had just been given a Heartgard Plus (on the vet’s advice) between his last two sets of cluster seizures…first seizures in 5.5 months. This was 2 days before the seizures that he was given the HeartGard. Had been on Bravecto before, and she said NOT to give him that anymore. Why had she let him be on it before?? I am sooooo upset with my vet, because she just casually mentioned on the phone “have you considered Hepatic Encephalopathy?” and I had never even heard of it before. That’s when I found YOU. WHY DIDN’T SHE ‘CONSIDER’ IT BEFORE???? She was killing my dog!!! I realize that Murphy may have more seizures as he continues to get better, but after being on 8 Zonisimides and 1 Phenobarbitol a day for 2.5 years to ‘control’ his seizures, this is just a small miracle to me. He actually rolled on his back in the yard yesterday for the first time in….gee, I can’t remember. He was sure enjoying himself and scratched his back that way for several minutes before coming back in the house. Sleeps on his side whenever he wants to; doesn’t have a hard time breathing like he used to. I think he is much happier than a couple of weeks ago, and he’s got some life in his eyes and seems to enjoy himself more. He interacts with me more, like he used to. The dog I know and love is returning……"
I help you decide what to feed your dog so that these seizures can be eliminated if at all possible.
