My approach for dogs started over 20 years ago as a desire to help humans. Better nutrition helped many of our human clients achieve phenomenal results. This approach was then adapted to benefit our pet population, primarily dogs but also cats, horses, birds, etc.
Pippen was one of the first dogs that this healthy eating approach was used with. I'll let Pippen the Pomeranian tell you his story:

Pippen's Story

Hi...my name is Pippen. My mom adopted me when she found me wandering in the streets by myself back in 1993. She put posters everywhere so my real parents could call, but no one called. So, she decided to be my new mommy. The vet who examined me said I was 7 years old. I was very sick then. I had a restricted trachea, worms in my stomach and I couldn’t hold any food down.
My mom changed my diet and started feeding me raw foods and she added whole food supplements to my diet. Soon, I became healthy and I never went back to the vet again.
My mom changed my diet and started feeding me raw foods and she added whole food supplements to my diet. Soon, I became healthy and I never went back to the vet again.
I’m now 19 years old as you can see from my white hair (see photo to the right). I don’t see or hear as well and I’m a bit confused at times. But, I have no arthritis, and I enjoy going for long walks with my mommy every day. I have a great appetite and I always lick my plate clean. I have complete control over my bladder and my bowel movements are excellent (no diapers for me). Hey, at 19 years old, I can’t complain.

I think without the diet and supplements my mommy gives me everyday, I would have gone to doggy heaven a long time ago. So, I’m thankful for the great diet I get and the whole food supplements my mommy adds to my foods every day.
I’m a good example for the fact that with a good diet and good supplements, we dogs can and do live long and healthy lives.

Pippen passed away from natural aging at nearly 20 years of age. He lived a long,
healthy and happy life and gave his owner Donia many years of unconditional love.

Some of these stories are quite remarkable. Supporting the health and immune systems of your dog with high quality food and whole food supplements is the best choice for their body and, in the long run, the most cost effective choice for you, in my opinion and experience.
You will simply be using the principles of Natural Healing that have been around for centuries. You can go to most any library in America and find hundreds of books on the subject. But you don't have time for that. See below for how this natural, nutritional approach has worked for many, many sick dogs.

I am truly blessed to be able to make such a positive difference in so many lives. My goal is to have your beloved dog as one of my next success stories!

PARIS THE YORKIE
We could never thank you enough. Its now been close to a month and a half since we were told there was no hope and that our only options were to either have our 8 year old Yorkie Paris euthanized due to her being in Liver failure and or that we could take her home for the night and love her and make her feel at peace and if she survived the night bring her back the next day to be put to sleep.
That night I came across your website. Everything sounding too good to be true almost like a late night infomercial advertising free money... It sounded too simple ... Too easy ...especially after being delivered news from our trusted Vet that we had mere hours left with our beloved Paris . He sought opinions from other colleagues all that supported she was in Liver failure and her values were off the chart and that she'd probably not make it through the night .
We reached out to you and within a couple of hours that night you called us. You got us started on the immediate Plan .. Skeptical but willing to try anything, especially knowing we had no alternative, we ran out and got her started . And I can say within hours we noticed a slight change .
Her Diarrhea that we had been battling for months and had no end in sight no matter what meds the vet prescribed stopped . The raw veggies as opposed to her Prescription Dry Kibble and Canned food instantly had her back to normal bowel movement . As little as it may seem it was a huge sign to my wife (Debbie) and I that maybe there was some sort of hope.
After continuing the Immediate Plan we were amazed to see her moving around and playing and very healthy appetite. Your reassurance and map of what to expect almost to the tee (improvement followed by the cleansing period as well as a dark period where it gets worse before it gets better) was and still is amazing .
And like almost all of the other stories we read on your website our Vet was blown away, he was apologetic after we sent him a video of her playing with her little rubber ducky. He had no answers but was amazed to see her results and turn around. At one point he even commented about calling you to learn more about an area he had no idea about so he could bring up at his next convention as well as making a contribution (which I plan on reminding him constantly) to your cause.
Six weeks later her blood tests show her Liver Values almost all to be back to Normal levels - a couple that are just above normal or just lower than normal are all trending to the right direction but the majority are all Normal now. Her levels originally went from 790 to 251 within 10 days . I am still amazed at how the simple change in diet from processed food to fresh organic as well as the supplements have saved her life!!!
Sorry for the long winded Email, but wanted to give you a complete run down of the past few weeks and to fully update you on where we are today. You have changed our lives forever and have saved Paris. Our family is still whole and complete as we Have Paris (Mommy) our Other Dog Olli (Daddy) and their son Otis.
Rick, Thank you again for helping us get to this point... We are forever Grateful...

SADIE THE BICHON FRISE
I wanted to show you Sadie's transformation since I've been working with you. The picture with Sadie side by side is before she was sick and after she got sick. The single shot below I took after only about 5 weeks into your better nutritional approach and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!

Sadie got groomed last Wednesday and came home like a new puppy. She still can't see, but she has her spunk back, she barks, wags her tail and she's playful! She even sits by our front door to sun herself! All of the things she stopped doing! I know we have a lifetime process of this but I can't thank you enough for your support and program! I thank God everyday that I searched for answers about our little Sadie and found you.
You've made our family whole again.

UPDATE: Just giving you an update on Sadie. When we brought her to the vet 3 months ago and found out that she was blind, her liver levels were over 400. I refused the sonogram and biopsy and found you. Since then, what we thought was a very small abscess turned into a huge tumor in her mouth. We just had it removed, but when they redid Sadie's blood work, her liver levels dropped to 45 from 400!!!! The vet asked me "what diet is she on"?? AMAZING. BTW, Sadie's fine after removing the tumor.

GUS THE YORKIE
It's only been about a month since we started Gus and Evie on the whole foods and supplement diet. We've had spectacular results, bordering on miraculous.
We were informed about a month ago that our 6 month old, 3 LB Yorkie, Spartacus Augustus (Gus) has a liver shunt that was not operable. Because we loved him we began looking for other options and were fortunate enough to have found your liver shunt site.
Gus had been experiencing episodes from the proteins and byproducts in his diet. I had noticed his aimless wandering, but the episodes were much harder to endure, rapid shuddering, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The vet first thought he had ingested some type of toxin.
Eventually another vet advised Gus likely had a shunt. We had a CT scan and confirmed the shunt. He would most likely not survive surgery. They said our only option was to put him down.
That's when we found you. After we spoke, we began weaning Gus and Evie onto the whole foods and supplement diet. The first day Gus only rested due to lingering effects of sedation from the CT Scan. By only the third day Gus was acting like a puppy again. After another week he was even better. Both dogs are thriving, Gus is better than ever!
It is truly a miracle. Thanks!

ZOE THE BLACK LAB
Zoe is our 4 year old black Lab. She was very sick. We thought we were going to lose her. Her liver enzymes were at 1400 when we took her to the ER. She was bleeding and could not hold anything down. The first picture shown is a picture of her at the hospital when she was sick.

After putting her on your program, a week later her liver enzymes were down to 500 and three weeks later they were at 147. She is doing great! She looks the healthiest she has ever been. She is very active. Her coat looks shiny healthy, and we are very pleased with your approach.
The other picture is one of Zoe and our son for his graduation pictures. It was taken a month and a half after starting your program. Thank you for all of your continuous help. We are very satisfied!

SOPHIE THE MINI SCHNAUZER
We started Sophie on your regimen almost a year ago. Looking back on it, I truly believe I was guided to you. Our normal practice would have been to simply accept what the vet said and hope for the best. We had an extremely bad experience with a local vet a few years ago which resulted in the death of our dog, so we’ve been skeptical ever since.
Once we found out Sophie had a possible liver shunt, we considered the options medically before us, but almost immediately upon doing some research and finding you on the web things made sense. After speaking to you personally things made even more sense.
After giving Sophie her supplements, and changing her diet to real foods, now almost a year later, Sophie is living proof that your approach works.
When Sophie turned 2 she began having UTIs every two months. We had her on antibiotics every two months. Finally the vet suggested surgery to correct a vulvar flap which they believed was causing the UTIs.
Sophie is 5 now and hasn’t had a UTI since March of 2016 when we started with you. For us and for Sophie, that is huge. Thanks to you and your work we have a healthy dog that shows no signs of illness, takes a walk every day, eats well and lives a wonderful life. We truly can’t thank you enough.

MIA and RYLEE'S STORY
I'm so excited that I can barely contain myself. I just went to the vet to have Mia and Rylee's liver values retested... Rylee's liver values are completely normal!!! Mia's are normal, too!!!! The doctor wanted me to check in with you because he said Mia's bile acid is still slightly elevated but it is WAY lower than it was, so he wants me to keep doing exactly what you tell me to do.
To clarify, Rylee just had the regular liver levels checked because she wasn't having trouble at the time Mia started with symptoms. Mia had the basic and the more advanced liver panels done. The vet was amazed when he saw that both dogs lost weight, had shiny coats, and had NO signs of jaundice.
The specific ALT value for Mia is down to 96 (reference range between 14 - 151). Her bile acids are down from 276 to 80.5 (range 0 - 12). I wish I could thank you in person. I'm so grateful!!!!!! I will follow any further recommendations you have. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

MOE THE TEACUP POODLE
I just want to take a minute and update you on my teacup poodle, Moe. I contacted you 9 months ago for information about elevated liver enzymes. Moe was taken in for a dental and his pre-op bloodwork showed his ALT to be 198. He was placed on Denamarin and then levels were rechecked a month later. The ALT had increased to 257. A Bile Acid test was performed and it also came back elevated. Our vet was wanting to do an ultrasound and liver biopsy. This was overwhelming to me and quite frightening.
I searched the internet looking for any information that I could find. I stumbled on your website and decided to contact you. After speaking with you on the phone, I opted to follow your regimen of fresh foods and supplements. While it was overwhelming in the beginning, I soon found a good routine and preparing Moe’s food has become much easier.
I have been very apprehensive about having his levels rechecked. But yesterday, I finally took him to the vet for bloodwork. I am pleased to say that ALL of his bloodwork is completely normal! His ALT was 116. I cannot thank you enough for all of your help.
From the beginning, your website was so informative and when we spoke on the phone you were so reassuring and encouraging! Thank you for offering a safe and natural alternative for our beloved dog!

STEWART THE SCOTTISH TERRIER
July 4, 2015 is when I first contacted Rick. My Scottish Terrier Stewart (10 years old) had liver issues (elevated liver values started May 2014) and I wanted to help him as much as possible without having him take medication or go through chemotherapy (as was the case with my past Scottish Terriers). I searched through the internet for quite a while and decided to try Rick’s approach.
Stewart started on Rick's nutritional/supplement approach on July 10, 2015. Within a couple of months Stewart’s liver values got better. My veterinarian could not believe it – all he could say was “Wow”! He lived another 6 months……
I am so thankful and appreciative to Rick for giving us (myself and Stewart’s 3 pals) the extra time with Stewart.
Currently I have 4 dogs – Noelle (Terrier Mix-7yrs old), Camille (Terrier Mix-6yrs old), Ali (Scottish Terrier-3yrs old) and Gavin (Scottish Terrier-2yrs old). They are all on the same foods and supplements. Every year they go for their annual checkup. So far, the results are great!
Thanks again!

BUSTER'S STORY
Many of the stories you will read here are remarkable. Not all the stories are happy ones, unfortunately. Here are comments from a dog owner that found our website too late:
This is a post I made to the liver support Group on Yahoo about my dog Buster. I want to thank you Rick for taking the time to talk with me yesterday morning. I wish I would have discovered you earlier.
I took Buster to Texas A&M to have one extraheptatic shunt repaired. He was very healthy and managed on Royal Canon Hepatic wet food, Lactulose and occasionally antibiotics. He had a small episode before surgery. I believe it was because our house had been sprayed for bugs. However I took it upon myself to research the surgery to a greater length.
Over and over I was told that medicine was only a bandaid and that I should opt for surgery. Unfortunately I did. The surgery went very well. The vet said he was amazed how fast Buster recovered. They discharged him. That evening he started having seizures. I rushed him to an emergency vet. It was two in the morning. They had to sedate him because the seizures would not stop. He was placed on oxygen with antiseptic. Each time they tried to remove him from the oxygen or even dial it down, he would begin to seize again uncontrollably.
After 24 hours with no change I made the decision to let him go. My heart is broken.
MY ADVICE, please research your options thoroughly! I was told over and over on the liver shunt & MVD support group on Yahoogroups.com that surgery was the best option. I talked to Rick while Buster was seizing. In fact I talked to my regular vet, the surgeon and also made contact with this website in a frantic attempt to try to save him. It was too late.
I highly recommend to all pet owners who have dogs with liver shunts to PLEASE make contact with Rick before opting for surgery. He believes he can help the liver with better nutrition and has a successful track record of doing so. I wish I could go back in time and use his approach with Buster. I am grieving horribly.

GOOFY THE LABRADOODLE
Goofy, my 10 year old, 100 pound, Labradoodle, had been failing to the point where two vets said his liver function was in the mid 500's and all they could do was make him "more comfortable with pain medication". That is when I discovered your website last May.
I haven't needed to take him to the vet since starting him on his new diet. His weight has dropped 15 to 20 pounds. His water consumption has dropped from four large bowls a day to one! His arthritis is MUCH improved and the most amazing two things have occurred. He was covered with Lipomas since he was 4 years old. I would guess they weighed 10 -15 pounds. The Lipomas are nearly gone (much of his weight loss).
He also had a cancerous tumor on his eyelid which would bleed, running down his face and onto the floor. The vet said she could remove it, but since his time was so limited, it may not be worth the risk of surgery. I also gave Goofy carrot juice from Costco on a regular basis ( 2 to 3 ounces 8 - 10 times per day as my extensive research found it shrinks tumors in dogs....and people). With no other treatment than carrot juice and your diet plan of natural foods and whole food supplements, Goofy has no trace of the eyelid tumor. Completely GONE in two months! He is now a healthy and energetic pooch with a wet nose which is always seeking my hand for a pet on his head or ears.
He is absolutely thriving and healthy! Thanks for your help!

HONEY THE TEACUP SCHNAUZER
Honey was in very bad shape and not eating. I didn't know what to do until I found your website. We started her on your Emergency Measures right away.
Honey has been on your approach and is doing very well. It took her three weeks before she ate anything on her own. Up until that point I had been feeding her with a syringe. Now, she is excited when I make her food and actually will come sit and watch me in the kitchen while I prepare her food whereas before it was always a struggle to get her to eat. She did do the regressing like you had mentioned but since you had warned me, I was ready for it.
Everything you said that would happen has, however, at Honey's own time. She has gained weight back and looks so healthy. She had dropped from 5.9 pounds to 3.2 and now she is back up to around 5. She is much more alert then she has been her own life. It's like a cloud has lifted from her brain. And the energy, she has more energy now than when she was a puppy. Thank you for giving my baby back to me better than she ever was. In a couple of months I will bring her back to redo her labs but I want to give her time to heal before I do that.
I can't believe the change in her in such a short time!

MISSY THE BICHON
Our Bichon named Missy got into Halloween candy in November 2014 and ate 23 Tootsie Rolls paper and all. Following our vet's directions we got her to throw up a lot of the candy. Within a month or so she started acting strange, pacing all over like a robot, never holding still. The vet said she was dehydrated and gave her IVs . She seemed OK for a week and then started acting strange again.
More tests followed with the terrible news of liver failure. She got so bad we had to carry her like a limp rag outside so she could go potty. I called the vet in complete despair and asked her if I could bring her in to have her euthanized. Our hearts were broken ! Thank God the vet was out of town that day!
That evening one of our daughters called saying they had come upon these people on the internet who worked with liver problems on dogs. I called Rick and he immediately gave instructions for us to follow. We started out very skeptical but within two weeks Missy was showing improvement. She had several incidents but Rick encouraged us and explained that was expected as the toxins came out of her system.
Not long ago we had to renew her rabies etc. and the vet wanted to test her liver. They were completely astonished at her results! She had improved from complete liver failure to the point where they said her liver was better than most of the dogs were that were considered normal !
She went from a lost zombie back to the bossy little critter that's always trying to order us around. When Rick told me to feed her real foods along with whole food supplements I was very skeptical but now we're so thankful we listened to him. Our only problem now is that Missy has become addicted to coconut water and turns her nose up at regular water . We can live with that! Thank you Rick!

KRAMER THE YORKIEPOO
I know you saved Kramer's life, and I am so grateful!
From the time we brought Kramer, our Yorkiepoo, home at 10 weeks old in July 2014, he struggled with recovering from vaccinations, bordetella, and lack of appetite. By the end of October, he started vomiting repeatedly, then stopped eating or drinking altogether. He was on an IV for four days, refusing all home-cooked food from our vet. Kramer was diagnosed with a liver shunt. His liver blood tests were 'off the charts' and an x-ray showed his liver was very small. We were told that Kramer had about a month to live, unless he got surgery to close his liver shunt. This would cost about $3,400, including the visit to the surgeon. I had already spent about $600 for the tests and 4 days at the veterinary hospital.
I am a teacher and a single mom of three, but I was prepared to somehow find that money to keep Kramer alive...he is an amazing dog. But the thought of putting Kramer through anesthesia when his liver was not functioning had me so scared about him even surviving the surgery. I researched this issue online for days, and found Rick and Cindy's website, but I am very skeptical about what I read online. I went to pick Kramer up at the vet after 4 days, to take him on the 90 minute drive to see the surgeon about this surgery. Kramer had lost a lot of weight, was limp, and wouldn't sit up. It was heartbreaking to see him like this. Desperate, I called the website's number for immediate help, and Rick answered the phone.
We spoke for about an hour while I drove to the appointment with the surgeon, and Rick answered every question I had, and made so much sense. I have learned a lot about nutrition over the years, and I have a degree in biology. My intuition told me I could trust what Rick was telling me, and I am so glad I listened to his advice and my inner voice! Kramer may not be alive if I hadn't.
I hung up from this conversation 10 minutes before Kramer was due to see the surgeon. I cancelled his appointment and went to Whole Foods Market instead. I bought raw coconut water and organic fruits. Kramer accepted a few capfuls of coconut water and watermelon juice, which I offered every hour. By the time we got home a few hours later, he was walking around! I implemented other suggested measures and within 24 hours of following Rick's advice, Kramer was more active than he had been in weeks.
We followed Rick's feeding advice, and added the suggested nutritional supplements and Kramer continued to improve. Two and a half months later, he was more active than ever, and we returned to the vet to test his blood levels again (we had not been back since his 4 days on the IV, before talking to Rick). I became concerned, because our vet said he has never had a dog survive a liver shunt. But when he called back days later with the results, he said Kramer's liver is 100% healthy! He said this was miraculous!
We always hear "food is the best medicine", but I have never seen first-hand such an amazingly dramatic change in health based totally on nutrition. What a lesson this is for all of us.
Kramer is back from the brink of death and on the road to a long and healthy life. I am more thankful to you than I can express.

SCOUT THE YORKIE / SHIH TZU
My dog Scout has been on your diet and supplement program for a week now. Can I just say.... what a change already!
His issues before were low energy, intermittent vomiting, and disinterest in food. Now, NO nausea or vomiting all week, and he has gone the whole week without Pepcid or Cerenia! He is ravenous and actually WANTS to eat! Twirls and barks for his meals and healthy snacks. Acts like raw coconut water is the nectar of the gods. Yesterday my afternoon dog walker left me a note and said "you will think I'm crazy but Scout looks taller."
But most amazing is his energy level. And we are just beginning the program! We walk 3 miles at an off lead trail after work every day with friends and their dogs. Scout has always walked the walk by my side occasionally stopping to sniff or pee. For the last few days he has been taking off and running full tilt through the fields with his big lab friends! He weighs just 13 pounds. They just run and Chase and bark at each other. Scout has never joined in before, not once in 3 years. Now he is play bowing and initiating games.
A 12 year old girl in our walking group said " look at Scout! You should get him a Superman cape!" I know the road is just beginning and there will likely be some challenges, but Scout just had the best week of his entire life, and I thank you from the deepest place in my heart.

OCEAN THE HUSKY
The year my dog Ocean turned 11, her bloodwork kept coming back with elevated liver enzymes. They continued to steadily increase every time I got her tested until they were at a level of 188 (supposed to be ~90). I did some research and found information on the website, and I contacted Rick shortly after.
I was very nervous and apprehensive about radically changing her diet, but she tolerated all of the small, incremental changes well. We had constant feedback regarding her progress with the transition, and I was pleased about how easy it was due to the simple steps Rick outlined for us.
Her most recent vet visit was only 4 months after starting her on the new diet, and she is now at a normal range. She has more energy, her skin and coat are healthy and shiny looking, and she loves the food and supplements.
We will definitely be continuing this diet in order to prolong her life and continue to improve the quality of her life. Thank you so much!

JOJO THE LAB / BLUE HEELER MIX
JoJo was diagnosed with an intrahepatic liver shunt at 4 months old. Choosing Rick's nutritional approach just seemed like the right path for us even though I didn't know how it would work out. I felt pressure going against medical advice that surgery would be my dog's only hope.
I felt like I needed to give her a chance to heal naturally. I felt like there was a 50/50 chance either way. Go for surgery or try to heal her with diet.
I discovered the shunt after an ultrasound was done. She was neurological and was very thin and had not been doing well almost since we got her as a puppy. In fact she never really was a puppy. She just slept a lot was moody and had hardly any energy.

After deciding against surgery and starting with Ricks recommendations our 4 month old puppy came back to life !!! The diet takes commitment and tinkering but to see the change is like watching a miracle. It was the best thing for her and me. She is one year old now and is doing really good. We have had the joy to be able to see her puppy side!! Her attitude is completely changed. I look forward to her future now instead of worrying about it.
Make the commitment. It takes time & work but it's been worth it for us 100%. We stay in contact with Rick as we go thru this journey. He provides ongoing coaching and support.

BELLE THE FOX TERRIER
Belle is a 13 year old Toy Fox Terrier. She was put on prescription hepatic dog food when she was 8 years old but had started having more problems as she has gotten older. She passed a bladder stone and started head bobbing. They diagnosed her with a liver shunt. I was very scared.
Now Belle is doing much better, she has a lot more strength and is very alert. Everyone has noticed the difference, we're all very happy. Belle even looks younger and is barking again and doing things we haven't seen her do in a long time. A shih tzu came to visit our house the other day and started drinking from her bowl and Belle ran to her bowl and growled at this 2 year old shih tzu who got scared and left her bowl alone. At another time I would've disciplined her but I was too happy to see Belle be herself - first time in a long time and I just laughed and let her be.
Thank you so much for all your help and support, I will forever be grateful.

PORTIA THE PUG PUP
Portia was in critical condition not expected to make it - a 5 month old pug in bad shape. I reached out to you and all I can say is AMAZING.
Rick, I would like to Thank You. It's only been four days of diet and one day of supplements and I'm here scratching my head ,asking myself "is this the same puppy that almost went to puppy heaven?"
Portia is playing ,running and alert. I'm impressed with everything that you have guided us through, quick responses and you actually care.
Now after 7 weeks she is doing amazing and there has been no sign of our old sick babygirl. She is healing well and is such a pleasure to be around. We now get to play for hours and I must admit I do miss her when she was dependent on me for comfort. Now she is so full of energy we get no cuddle time but I am blessed that this is the way she should have been all along.
Portia is adjusting well to everything. We have her on everything you recommended and we are noticing what she loves and what she tolerates. Hope all is well with you and have a wonderful day...

UPDATE January 2015
So here we are 4 months shy of Portia's anniversary under your plan. I must say everything is amazing, she has not had an episode in 7 months and is really a fun loving pug. She is putting on the weight and oh my goodness her number one compliment is her coat - shiny, shiny.
Sending some pics and again I thank you for saving Portia's life. Since this journey with Portia we have opened up an Instagram account for Portia and she has become quite the celebrity. We donate to sick babies and play "paw pal" games every Sat in honor of Portia's health. If you ever get Portiathepug sent from me to you that's her user name on Instagram.
I have referred others to you and know you will help them just as you have helped Portia.
Thanking You,

PORTIA THE PUG UPDATE July 2016
Just thought I'd share some updates on our precious Portia.
We came to you when she was 5 months old, Portia will be 3 years old in November 2016. Our Portia is Instagram Famous, and has shared her journey with her Pals from around the world.
We have pals in the UK , Switzerland and every part of the globe that has reached out to us with what we do to keep Portia healthy.
At this time Portia has not had any issues with Liver Shunt, no episodes, she is a healthy 17 lbs pug who is adored by thousands. We've been busy with several things that has helped the community on Instagram. Portia has her own Auction page that has raised over $17,000 with just 5 Auctions.
One thing that has been on my mind is helping other Liver Shunt pups. At times many can't afford your program and I do understand why. Like us, we were left with a $3000 emergency bill and left with not knowing what to do. Luckily we found you and you saved Portia's life.
I remember thinking "how are we gonna swing the new cost of your program after being hit with that huge bill."
I would love to start helping these pals that need you but are needing help financially. I'm in the works of raising funds just for that reason. In the meantime, I Thank You for giving Portia a shot in life. Oh, Portia is one heck of a Diva. You would just love her.
Thanking You
Cynthia Peraza
One last thing: A vet saw her and stopped me, he had never seen a pug as beautiful and healthy as her. He asked what I fed her and I told him about you. He was in Awe. Yep made me smile...

BAILEY'S STORY
Teddy and Bailey are brother & sister Yorkies that are less than a year old. Teddy's health is fine, but when we took Bailey to be spayed they checked her liver enzymes and her ALT was very high at 400+. We then did the Bile Acid Test that showed her bile acids at 415 post meal. I understand they are supposed to be under 15. Bailey was diagnosed with a liver shunt. The Ultrasound was inconclusive but I understand from you that this is often the case. Bailey had little energy and liked to hide in tight places. We were to meet with a surgeon later in the week when we found your website and decided to try your nutritional approach. The last thing we wanted was to put Bailey through a dangerous surgery that was likely unnecessary.
Both her and Teddy have been on your diet for a month now and LOVE it!!! Bailey is like a completely different puppy. She no longer spends her days underneath the couch and has been extremely energetic. Overall, she appears to be doing great at this point.
Here are pictures of both Bailey & Teddy. The first photo above is of Bailey right before she started the diet. Notice that her right eye was slowly sealing shut (probably her way of ridding the toxins from her body due to her poor liver health). The next photo below is of both dogs after being on your diet for just one week. You can really see the difference in just a short time.
Bailey really is doing great, and I can’t thank you enough for all your help and weekly emails. You are a true wealth of information and life saver for sure!
September 2014 update:
I wanted to give you a recent update on Bailey. Last week, I brought her to get her blood work tested to see how the diet was helping. All I can say is that the vet was COMPLETELY shocked by her results. Obviously the diet is working! Here are Bailey's test results (both past and present):
ALT results:
5/20/2014- 854
5/27/2014 - 558
6/18/2014 - 432
9/4/2014 - 101
Bile Acid results:
5/20/2014 - pre: 118.6
post: 120.7
6/18/2014 - pre: 291.8
post: 415.4
9/10/2014 - pre: 73
post: 137.3
I am so thrilled with Bailey's numbers! She is moving in the right direction. I can't thank you enough for all of your help. We feel extremely fortunate to have found your website.

LOLITA THE YORKIE/POMERANIAN
Lolita is the cutest and sweetest half Yorkshire terrier and Pomeranian mix little pup with a smile on her face. She is now 2.5 years old.
When we first got her she was 11 weeks old and little under 3lbs - see picture right. She had little to smile about then. A week after we got her she got really sick. She was throwing up, was apathetic, non-coherent and drooling , not moving too much on her own. We rushed her into emergency and she stayed at the hospital overnight in order to run some blood and urine tests. She was dehydrated too and was given IV fluids. Her labs were not conclusive - it excluded diabetes and left us a diagnosis of some undetermined deficient liver condition common with Yorkies. We were sent home.
She had another of those episodes about a month later when we rushed to the emergency again. We thought we were going to lose her this time. As we brought her back home we watched her closely and did a bit of research on liver shunt in dogs and got rid of the commercial dog food we were feeding her and we started making food for her at home with organic meat and veggies. She stopped having those episodes then, but she did not have a lot of energy either. Something was obviously missing. That was when Kurt contacted Rick and we put Lolita on a suggested diet of meat, raw vegetables, raw fruits and specific whole food based supplements.

She gained more weight and she started having more energy and seemed to be happier too. It was almost like we got a new dog with tons of energy always ready to play. Lolita has adjusted to a new diet quickly and she loves her raw veggies, fruit, nuts and meat every day. She is particularly keen on persimmons these days but she always enjoys lettuce too!
Today Lolita is a happy and full of energy little pup with a healthy weight of 7 lbs and a shiny silky fur coat. She is also pretty athletic for a small dog. She enjoys fetching a ball in a park, going to the beach, hiking, camping and running by the bike when we go on biking trips.

She is our little precious baby and we take her with us everywhere we go.
She has not had any episodes ever since we started working with Rick and we adjusted her diet and incorporated the supplements. We feel that she will be able to live a full and happy life and she has yet so much more to experience. We are so grateful to Rick for saving Lolita's life and all his care and support.

KATO THE ENGLISH BULLDOG
I am so thankful for all that you have done for us! Kato has been doing amazing, so I wanted to share our story to hopefully help others.
Kato, being a year and a half old English Bulldog, was never a highly active dog, but one day his behavior seemed especially out of the ordinary. He had started vomiting, putting his face in the wall or staring blankly into space, and snapping at things in the air that were not there.
After taking his temperature and finding it normal, we refrained from the ER vet, but did decide to take him to our normal veterinarian the next morning. Our vet seemed to be more concerned with the GI upset, but did not pay much attention to the behavior abnormalities, writing them off as just Kato's way of acting when he's sick. We paid $150 for a shot, pills, and special food to help ease the vomiting.
Kato stopped throwing up, but his behavior continued and even got worse. After taking him back to the vet, we spent another $200 doing x-rays, blood work, and other tests. We were told his liver was slightly smaller, a possible indication of a liver shunt, but everything else appeared normal. We were sent home with some Lactulose and other medications that worked temporarily but eventually stopped working and nowhere near solved the problem.
Next, we took him in for a Bile Acid Test and more blood work, which cost us another $150. All of this came back inconclusive as well. At this point, Kato was so badly in pain, that we had family encouraging us to euthanize him and put him out of his misery. I was devastated. I began my own research since the vet visits seemed like nothing but a waste of money, and that's when I found Rick and Cindy.
I was extremely skeptical at first. The words "free consultation" seemed to me like there must be a catch. After putting it off and just hoping Kato would get better, I finally took the leap of faith and contacted them because I was truly desperate and felt it was my last resort.
After contacting them and starting the diet, I was still skeptical. I was also nervous about all the extra time feeding Kato would take with our busy schedule; however, it was the best choice we ever made. Eventually, Kato's meal plan became enough of a routine that it no longer takes much time. There were times I felt the diet simply wasn't working, but after waiting it out we have truly seen the results we were promised.
Kato is a much healthier dog, even better than before he got sick. He's able to run and jump again. I knew things were getting better when he was finally getting up to greet me at the door again. He has energy that I have never seen out of him. Not only that, but he loves the food that he is eating, and I feel better feeding it to him. Rick and Cindy were extremely helpful throughout the entire transition.
I encourage anyone that is skeptical at all to at least give the approach a try for six months. It truly was a life saver for Kato. To this day we have no definitive answer from a veterinarian on what Kato's problems really are, but I do know he is healing now thanks to his diet.

FOSTER THE 14 Year Old JACK RUSSELL
We began to see changes in Foster within a day or so of getting started. As a reminder, Foster is a 14 year old Jack Russell who suffers from an extra hepatic portosystemic liver shunt - and a large one at that. We were at the point where he was sleeping most of the day, having trouble walking, and just not engaged in life anymore - we had to wake him just to syringe water into him. My husband had started the dreaded "quality of life" discussions with me.
We started your emergency measures with Foster and almost immediately he was more alert and we saw improvements in his ability to walk. Honestly, that was enough for me. Today - he ran back inside after being out and tried to jump into his bed - well as much as a 14 year old can run and jump :-) I don't remember the last time that happened - more then a year?. While eating dinner my baby actually tried to jump on the couch on his own - seriously. I know that it has been years since he could do that. Oh, and he was begging for food. He is chasing the cats again. Each one of these things are huge milestones for us - not the cats so much though.
You can really see the difference in his eyes - he is there now where before he had an almost vacant look. Plus he has his cute ears back - all perky and forward not laying against his head. He has a long ways still to go but he is so much improved.
My husband is the one that will have to keep things going as he is retired and I work full time. He humored me by starting this program. We talked last night and he is very happy and agrees that Foster is soooo much better now and that the behaviors we are seeing are ones that have been gone for a long time. I forgot to tell you that last Foster tried to eat on his off the plate a few times as well - I have been hand feeding him for years now so that was a first
I reached out to you in desperation - I was measuring Fosters life in weeks at that point. I don't expect a miracle - I didn't think as old as he is and as long as he has fought his liver shunt that he can be healed. Now I have hope. I do know that I have more of my baby back then I have had for a year or more.
Just so you know we did see the vet the week we started with the emergency measures He was 100% supportive of what we are doing. He really enjoyed seeing Foster walking around in the office on his own.
Before all of my recent pics are of him were in his bed sleeping. The one included here was hard to get because now he doesn't want to stay still! What a difference.
UPDATE December 2014: Unfortunately, Foster didn't make it. He went downhill really badly starting 2 weeks ago which was about 2 months after starting him on your approach. I think we just started things far too late. I wish we had known to do this 10 years ago. I am so grateful for the extra time your program gave us - if it hadn't been for what we learned with you we would have lost him months ago.
I still can't believe he is gone and I won't see him anymore. Thank you so much,

MALLORY'S STORY
I'm so thankful for your help, knowledge & method. It might sound crazy to some people but it really works. To see Mallory today, a 7 year old Lab mix, I would never have believed you. She is absolutely loving her new diet and she is full of energy & sass. She cannot wait for me to set her bowl down. It is so good to see her feel so good. She is fully transitioned to the new diet too. I proudly threw out the Science Diet Rx formula. The first supplements were started this morning & she took them as you instructed me without any problems. After just a short time her recurring UTIs are a thing of the past. I can't thank you enough for all your support & emails!

SUZIEQ'S STORY
My SuzieQ is going to be 5 in two weeks. I have had Q with me since she was a pup...we battled a tooth infection early on and beat it! Never thought much after that accept what a tough little Norfolk Terrier she was, to have survived the level of tooth and jaw infection at such a young age. She is full of herself, entered the show ring, is an AKC champ, runs go to ground trials, and is always on the go...so about two years ago after a show, we noticed she had a UTI and treated her....(we figured it was because she was crated and would refuse to go in the ex pen at the shows). She then had a couple of repeat UTIs, had trouble conceiving, had a litter last summer and then ended up with bladder stones in December 2011.
We had run the gammut of antibiotics, diets, supplements from a holistic vet etc, then we decided to remove the stone in the bladder. It was on our minds that we should do a bile acid test, however, she had had no other symptoms of liver shunt. My vet wanted to remove the stone/(s) as the source or recurrent UTI.
As he was prepping her, he called me to let me know that he was not going ahead with the surgery due to her abnormal kidney function (BUN was low, protein low). He ran the bile acid test; 16 before she ate and over 70 after she ate. He noticed a kidney stone too.
We have investigated raw and other diets in the past, just never went forward with it...now that we know our little SuzieQ is battling a problem, I wanted to pursue the nutritional avenue first before even going to any surgical or medication route. I was eager to get her started as soon as possible and looked forward to your consultation.
On day 10 of her new eating plan we now have a dog that is remarkably different in terms of her energy level and attitude. End of week four - All seems to be going well , SuzieQ continues to eat well. In fact, she is barking at me for more food these days...she has a tendency to be bossy.
Suzie Q appears to be well these days. She has good muscle tone and bright eyed to boot. As for the supplements....Jake, my other Norfolk is 9 and was diagnosed with bladder cancer....because of your coaching and our results with SuzieQ, both Jake and Rochell were switched to your diet back in October. Our vet that is working with Jake on some alternative treatments was ecstatic that he is on a proper diet with all of the wonderful supplements.
Jake was diagnosed on 12/31/12 and we visited a wonderful Homeopathic vet that was extremely pleased to see that I was giving Jake the organic microalgae!
I cannot thank you enough for the time you take to ensure success on such a terrific nutritional path.

UPDATE: May 2014
I have not kept you posted on little SuzieQ's progress this past 6 months. We were focused on our beloved Jake who lost his battle with bladder cancer in January. His last year was a miracle in of itself - thanks to you for sharing and coaching us on nutrition - it gave Jake an extra year.
You asked me to be patient and stick to the plan - as of today 5/10/14 the large bladder stone is completely dissolved!!!! All smaller stones also gone, no crystals, no infection, CBC and Chem Panel completely normal!
When she was first diagnosed, both vets encouraged me to pursue surgery to remove the stone. But because we connected with you, our path to wellness changed and thank goodness for that...no surgery needed, just time and patience.
My vet asked me if I had shared the recipe with Royal Canin and Hills! He said he would not have believed it if he did not see it in action.
SuzieQ began your approach in October 2012 and by January of 2013 she was completely free of the bladder crystals or infection. It took time to dissolve the stone, but the time was so worth it.
Since I missed taking her in for her check up last November, the stone(s) may have dissolved back then, either way, it is a success.
Thanks to you!

ROXIE'S STORY
Roxie is a 5 pound female Morkie who is now 15 months old. Before we found you in June 2012, she was having frightening seizures. I didn’t know what to do and was very upset. The vet had given her Phenobarbitol but then diagnosed a liver shunt which was confirmed by ultrasound.
I also have two Maltese that are approximately 2 years old. We had not had any trouble with liver shunt, but I understand the breed is susceptible to liver shunt. I was thinking it might
be a good idea to put all three of our dogs on the natural food/supplement program. Stella, the oldest Maltese is a bit overweight at 13.8 pounds (parents were 9-10 pounds). Sophie is 7.6 pounds (parents were 5-7 pounds).
Roxie has been perfect for almost two weeks! I’m very encouraged. Several changes have been made; no more medication of any kind, no more Hills k/d canned food, much smaller meals more frequently and significantly less animal protein.
I am so grateful for the help that you and Donia are providing. These three little girls are the healthiest dogs I have ever had and I know it is because of the real food diet and supplements. I can’t thank you enough for basically saving little Roxie! She hasn’t had a seizure since the first week of July (almost 4 months) and is now so healthy and full of energy…pretty amazing.
Thought you might like to see a picture of the little darling that you helped save. She really is doing great and I can’t thank you enough for all your patience and help.
UPDATE December 2014
Thank you, again, for your patience and help with Roxie. You absolutely saved her life and she is doing very well. We take her in for acupuncture once a month for her tight psoas (she has a luxating patella that is making her hip flexor tight) which really seems to help and she loves it! Sophie still has dry eyes that we are treating, but all three girls are very healthy and continue to have good reports at their annual wellness checkups. These are the first dogs I’ve had that didn’t have ear infections, teeth issues or some other condition requiring frequent visits to the vet and I know it is because of their diet and supplements. So great!
UPDATE MAY 2017

PRINCESS' STORY
I wanted to take a moment and write you with an update on Princess. I swear I wish I could hug you both! I am so pleased with how she has changed, she is almost like a new animal!
We are going on about maybe seven or eight weeks now I think. I honestly never imagined this would work, I almost felt as if I was getting sucked into an infomercial gimmick or something. I just didn't think there was that much difference in what we ate that would cause this significant difference in her health.
I do believe her detox isn't over, but I am ready and here with her for when it comes. She sleeps with me now where she used to hide out in my closet all the time. She even stretches out and rolls on her back to have her belly rubbed! This seems like normal canine behavior but this was never typical behavior of this dog. You know, when she was taking her medication I thought that she was slightly suffering from some sort of mental retardation or something. It was like she couldn't really see me. I thought she may have had a hint of blindness from all the seizures. Now, she's so alert, she's such a joy to have around. I am so thankful that you returned my initial call about her.
Thank you so very much.

JJ when I adopted him
JJ'S STORY
I adopted JJ December of 2011 from Second Chance Rescue Group. JJ was found weak, shedding his hair to the point that half of his back hardly had any hair left, impacted anal glands, suffering from flea allergies and digestive and liver problems (couldn't keep his foods down, vomits constantly and diarrhea).
I wanted to help him holistically and thank God I came across your website. You taught me how to feed him a real food diet and recommended your organic food based supplements. Now it is a year later and JJ looks like a brand new dog. He gained weight, his coat is amazingly soft and long, he no longer has any anal gland problems (he doesn't scoot any more), has no fleas, never itches, doesn't vomit, and his elimination is perfect.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the coaching you gave me. I'm now a strong believer in feeding dogs a real food diet and giving them your wonderful nourishing whole food supplements.

KATY'S STORY
Katy is a 7 year old shih-tzu diagnosed 2 1/2 yrs ago with congenital liver shunts. Before finding you she had been on Denamarin and a lower protein diet. She was doing OK but not great, and she would have episodes every week or so where she just wouldn't eat much and would lay around a lot. Then she was much worse, not eating, sleeping most of the time and shaking/weak. She also had the ear infections and very bad smelling breath and urine. We started on your approach in Nov 2012.
The last time I wrote to you we had just had the very bad day and night (day after Christmas) when we thought we were going to lose her. She has been much better for two weeks now. Last week she was running, playing, giving all the other dogs a rough time like her old self. We actually couldn't believe it and we have just been waiting for the other shoe to drop...part of the reason I have not emailed. I felt like if I got too excited things would change. The last couple of days she has been a little lower but not bad.
We are so relieved to see her staying steady and hope that maybe the worst is over. I feel the change is due to what we are doing with your help and I am very grateful for your continued support.
She has not had any of the symptoms of confusion, pacing, circling at all for two weeks
Thanks again,

MOLLY'S STORY
Hi, just to let you know Molly is taking her supplements well. We are increasing as instructed. She is eating so much better. Had to almost force her before and sometimes went almost all day without eating. Now is barking for her meals when she has to wait the 15 min (after taking the probiotics). Eats all her food put out for her. (twice a day.) She also seems to feel better and her energy level is noticeably higher. We are praying this works”
“Just wanted to let you know about another improvement. Before starting on your approach, Molly was getting a walk twice a day, but it didn’t last long - just the length of our street block. She would get so exhausted after 1 block that she would lay down and be unable to walk back home, and needed to be carried back. After being on her new diet and whole food supplements we no longer take her for a walk, SHE takes us and will now easily go completely around two entire blocks. Our family and friends cannot believe the change in her. We will continue to give up updates. Thanks and have a wonderful New Year, and much good health and happiness to you and yours.”

Hi, just to let you know Molly is taking her supplements well. We are increasing as instructed. She is eating so much better. Eats all her food put out for her. (twice a day.) She also seems to feel better and her energy level is noticeably higher. We are praying this works”

LOLLY THE YORKIE is off to a great start
We are very encouraged with the results from our first week on the program. Loli enjoys the probiotic supplements before her meal. Also, we were surprised that her appetite had increased and she was less picky about eating her food. Most times now, she is not picky at all when barking at us to feed her. That never happened before as we always had to struggle with her to eat. In addition, she loves the fruit snacks of avocado, watermelon, banana, etc.
She has been extremely energetic and overall, appears to be doing great at this point. I know that it has only been a week but we do notice a big change. We are hoping this transition continues to bring favorable results.
Also, thank you for the articles and testimonies as they add to our knowledge of the issue and also bring hope that we will have the same results. We seem to be on the right path.
Thank you,

Update November 2015
After getting Loli off to a great start in 2013 we kind of stopped doing what you suggested. By August of 2015 Loli was not doing well again and we were very concerned. She was back to being a very picky eater and her weight was not good. She was on that Lactulose and she had a few episodes and we almost lost her. We called you to get Loli started again on your approach.
I have to tell you, it is like a miracle!! Since we spoke, we started giving her the supplements again. She has responded great to this approach. She has so much energy now and her appetite has drastically improved. When we brought her to our holistic vet, he weighed her and couldn't believe it. He actually had to weigh her again because he thought it was a mistake. She has gained about 2 pounds and her blood work came back great as well.
Our other healthy Yorkie, Xena, is using your approach as well. She is also doing great.
We really appreciate your help. We are amazed at the results. Loli's menu is still limited but she does eat well.
We are so happy with the total transformation of Loli.
Thank you for all your help.

CHELO THE DOGO ARGENTINO
I have a 4 year old 110lb Dogo Argentino named Chelo from original bloodlines as created. He comes from multiple World Champion bloodlines and is my first stud dog, although not yet bred.
On December 19th 2008 he started dripping blood from his urine and I took him to the vet after it did not go away for a couple days. The vet said his PH in urine was 7.0 with crystals in the urine and gave him a 30-qty of 960mg smz/tmp antibiotic 2 xs day. and switched from Eukanuba natural adult to Hills S/D can food 5-6 per day. When he was off the antibiotics for 2 days, the blood was back stronger than before. I have tried 7 vets within 3 years, none seemed to really know what to do other than to recommend the prescription diet and antibiotics.
I read one of your articles about crystals in the urine and when I contacted you, you were very helpful and your explanation of why these stones develop made sense to me. I followed your recommended diet for Chelo and gave him the food based supplements. He’s now doing very well. His fecal matter has finally become the best looking; solid and brown, since the whole change in diet and giving him your recommended supplements. For sure your diet and supplements have changed his life for the better in my opinion.
